From the 2011-12 Millsaps College Catalog
Requirements for the French major: Students may complete a major in French by successfully completing FREN 2000 or its equivalent and a minimum of 28 semester hour, normally in seven courses, beyond 2000 as follows: FREN 2110, then at least two literature courses at the 3000 level or higher taken at Millsaps, and FREN 4900. Both literature coursesmust be completed with a grade of C or higher before taking FREN 4900 during the spring of the senior year, unless special permission is granted by the Chair. A grade of C or higher is required for courses in the major at the 2000 level and beyond. Students who place out of 2110 are required to substitute it with a course at a higher level. No more than three courses beyond 2000 taken abroad in a program not led by Millsaps language faculty may count for the major and they must be approved by the Chair of Modern Languages, as stated in the International Study section below.
Requirements for the Spanish major: Students may complete a major in Spanish by successfully completing SPAN 2000 or its equivalent and a minimum of 28 semester hour, normally in seven courses, beyond 2000 as follows: at least two courses from the following list (SPAN 2110, SPAN 2120, SPAN 2130, SPAN 2140), then at least two literature courses at the 3000 level or higher taken at Millsaps, and SPAN 4900. Both literature courses must be completed with a grade of C or higher before taking SPAN 4900 during the fall of the senior year, unless special permission is granted by the Chair. Completion of the senior seminar is required for the major, and must be completed with a grade of C or higher before taking the comprehensive exam in the spring. A grade of C or higher is required for courses in the major at the 2000 level and beyond. Students who place out of any course(s) above 2000 (SPAN 2110, 2120, 2130, 2140) are required to substitute the course(s) with a course (or courses) at a higher level. No more than three courses beyond 2000 taken abroad in a program not led by Millsaps language faculty may count for the major and they must be approved by the Chair of Modern Languages, as stated in the International Study section below.
Students are not allowed to repeat any course in the 1000-1010-2000 sequence in French or Spanish after they have completed a course at a higher level. In other words, students may not repeat 1000 after completion of 1010 or 2000. Same for 1010 and 2000.
In order to become more proficient in a foreign language, significant time must be spent speaking it. It is strongly encouraged that all majors have a long-term language immersion experience. Transfer of credit to be counted towards the major is subject to departmental approval.
Requirements for the French minor: Students may elect a minor in French by successfully completing FREN 2000 or its equivalent and a minimum of 16 semester hours in four courses beyond 2000. At least one of the courses must be a literature course at the 3000 level or above taken at Millsaps. All courses beyond 2000 must be taken at Millsaps (or in a language program abroad led by a faculty member from the Department of Modern Languages. An exception will be made for just one course above 2000 (other than the required literature course at the 3000-level or higher), if taken abroad in a language program approved by the Chair of Modern Languages, as stated in the International Study section below. Students who place out of 2110 are required to substitute it with a course at a higher level. In order to become more proficient in a foreign language, significant time must be spent speaking it. We therefore strongly encourage that all minors have a language immersion experience.
Requirements for the Spanish minor: Students may elect a minor in Spanish by successfully completing SPAN 2000 or its equivalent and a minimum of 16 semester hours in four courses beyond 2000. At least two of the courses must be completed from the following list (SPAN 2110, SPAN 2120, SPAN 2130, SPAN 2140) and at least one of the courses must be a literature course at the 3000 level or above taken at Millsaps. All courses beyond 2000 must be taken at Millsaps (or in a language program abroad led by a faculty member from the Department of Modern Languages). An exception will be made for just one course above 2000 (other than the required literature course at the 3000-level or higher), if taken abroad in a language program approved by the Chair of Modern Languages, as stated in the International Study section below. Students who place out of any course(s) above 2000 (SPAN 2110, 2120, 2130, 2140) are required to substitute any of these courses with a course (or courses) at a higher level. In order to become more proficient in a foreign language, significant time must be spent speaking it. We therefore strongly encourage that all minors have a language immersion experience.
Language requirement and placement test: The Department of Modern Languages administers its own placement test. The test is compulsory for students who wish to continue their work in a language they studied in high school. Students beginning a new language are not required to take the placement test.
According to the placement test scores, students will either satisfy the language requirement or will be placed into 1000, 1010, 2000, or 2110 (2120-2130-2140). Academic credit will be awarded only for courses taken. Students may present transcripts verifying that they have completed the equivalent of Millsaps basic and intermediate language courses taken at other institutions, thereby satisfying the language requirement.
To satisfy the language requirement, students must demonstrate proficiency at the intermediate level by successfully completing a course in 2000, or 2110 (2120-2130-2140), or its equivalent.
International study: Transfer of credit for language courses taken abroad in programs not administered by Millsaps is subject to departmental pre-approval. Copies of the catalog with the course description must be submitted for pre-approval to the department chair by the following dates: October 11 for the following spring semester; February 11 for the following summer session; April 11 for the following fall semester. Students may be required to do additional work in order to receive credit. For further information about international study opportunities, see sections on International Study and Study Abroad. Students completing the languages abroad, that are not offered at Millsaps, may satisfy the language proficiency requirement for a B.A. degree by completing a combination of course work with at least two upper level courses and a written test demonstrating language proficiency with approval from the Department chair of Modern Languages.
