Today's college graduates face one of the toughest job markets our nation has ever seen. Upon graduation, these young men and women will need all the help that they can get, and the purpose of Major Mentors is to provide advice and direction to current students about their career paths and choices. Millsaps alumni are a remarkable group. Our alums are located around the world and in virtually every career field, where they have achieved great success. Major Mentors hopes to capitalize on that success to create a new career networking site for our students.

THE PURPOSE OF MAJOR MENTORS

The purpose of Major Mentors is to tap into the vast resource of the Millsaps alumni base and create a network for the benefit of both current Millsaps students and recent graduates. By signing up, Millsaps alumni will volunteer to serve as mentors to current and recent students who have questions about their future career paths. A directory of participating alumni will be created for students to research. If a student has questions about a specific medical school, he can search the database for a Millsaps graduate who attended that school. If a student is curious about a certain career field, he can search for an alumnus who works in that field. If a student accepts a job in a city in which they don't know anyone, the student can search for a former Major who could provide advice on where to live. Contact will be initially by e-mail only. The mentor will have discretion on providing their telephone number or other information. Major Mentors is not a job search website, and students should not use it as such.

WHY ALUMNI SHOULD GET INVOLVED

A degree from Millsaps College is a badge of honor that you will carry with you throughout your life. Because of the wealth and breadth of experience of our Millsaps graduates, our alumni base can provide invaluable assistance to young people that they might not receive otherwise. The Major Mentors Program is an opportunity for you to reconnect with your alma mater while providing a tremendous service to the Millsaps community. Every Millsaps graduate should seriously consider becoming a Mentor and then get involved by signing up. With your help, the reputation and prestige of Millsaps College will continue to grow as we demonstrate that Millsaps was more than just a college, but an experience that lasts a lifetime.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

If you are a student or recent graduate:

If you are an alum who wants to serve as a Mentor:

MAJOR MENTORS GUIDELINES FOR STUDENTS

The following are suggestions for Students/Graduates on how to use Major Mentors:

  • You might talk to your mentor about what their particular profession or industry is like, the skills that are needed, and what experience you may need.
  • You may wish to ask your mentor to provide you with insight, guidance or information regarding your career or internship search, and get the benefit of their experience and knowledge
  • You could ask your mentor ideas on how to market yourself in their particular industry or profession
  • You could ask your mentor to suggest networking ideas or if they have any specific networking contacts you could utilize
  • You may wish to ask your mentor to provide information about the industries or particular organizations of their geographic area

The following is a list of what Students/Graduates may not do:

  • Do not share any personal or private information of your mentor with anyone else.
  • Do not give contact info of your mentor to any other students/graduates who are also in need. Encourage others to sign up for the Major Mentor's network and develop their own unique mentor connection(s).
  • Do not share any employer or industry contacts that you have received from your mentor with others. Sharing the contacts you have received could jeopardize the mentor relationship you have made as well as the relationship that your mentor may have with the contacts.

**Remember that job searching is the responsibility of the students and graduates who wish to utilize this network, not the Mentors, and you must always follow the guidelines and restrictions in order to maintain the integrity of the network. This network is one of the tools that can help you to be successful.
